After briefly working as a secretary, Goff began a career as an actress, performing under the name Pamela Travers (Travers was her father’s first name). Goff and her sisters attended first a nearby girls’ school and then a boarding school in Ashfield. After her father’s death in 1907, Goff moved with her mother and two sisters to Bowral, New South Wales, Australia, where they were supported by a maternal great aunt. ![]() Pamela Lyndon Travers was born Helen Lyndon Goff on August 9, 1899, in Maryborough, Queensland, Australia. Her books based on the magical nanny were translated into numerous languages and were the basis for both the successful motion picture Mary Poppins (1964) and the stage musical (2004–13).
